Behind the BRUH: The Stage and the Backstage

Promoting an app in public while the house is falling apart in private.

There is a version of me that shows up online. He is friendly, he believes in this, he tells you BRUH is for adults who want real friends nearby. He is not fake. He is just standing in a spotlight that only lights up about three feet of the room.

Everything else is backstage.

The two-minute switch

I can record something about BRUH, sound genuinely hopeful, hit post, and be back on my knees with a vacuum attachment two minutes later. That switch used to feel dishonest. I have decided it is not. It is just what a one-person operation looks like when you compress it.

The performance is real and the mess is real. Both at once.

The part that actually hurts

Here is the thing I have avoided saying plainly, so I will say it plainly.

The response has been slower than I hoped. I put something out, I feel that small lift of maybe this is the one that lands, and then I check and it is a handful of views and no new signups. There is a specific kind of quiet after that. Not dramatic. Just a little sad. A little discouraged.

I imagined more people would be here by now. I catch myself doing the math on how long the empty-room phase is supposed to last, and there is no answer, because nobody gets one.

And then the same thing happens every time. Something under all of it says: do not give up, keep pushing. So I write the next post. I fix the next thing. I open the laptop with a dog leaning on my shin and the washing machine going.

Performing hope is not the same as lying

I worried for a while that promoting BRUH while feeling discouraged made me a fraud. I do not think that anymore.

I actually believe in the thing. I believe adults need platonic friendship as much as they need anything else, and that there is almost nowhere built for that. My belief in the idea and my disappointment in the current numbers are two separate facts, and neither one cancels the other.

What would be dishonest is claiming momentum I do not have. So I do not. I would rather tell you it is early and slow and that I am still here.

What backstage actually holds

  • The flea treatment schedule, which does not care about launch timing.
  • Two dogs who need me at exactly the moment I have focus.
  • A disability that decides how much I get to do today, not me.
  • Family pressure, the kind that comes with love attached, which somehow makes it heavier.
  • Paperwork. Another verification email. Another form that wants a document I already sent.
  • A signup screen I refresh more often than I should admit.

None of that goes in the post. All of it is in the room while I make the post.

The small things that keep me on stage

One real signup changes the day. Not the trend. Just one person deciding to try. When it happens I sit with it for a second instead of immediately wanting nine more.

Showing up is the only variable I control. I cannot make people find BRUH this week. I can make BRUH better this week and keep telling people it exists. That is the whole job description.

Slow is not the same as dead. Every group I have ever loved being part of started with almost nobody in it. I have to keep reminding myself I am in the almost-nobody part, not the it-did-not-work part.

If you are also performing

If you are the person who posts the upbeat thing and then goes back to a house that needs you, or a body that is not cooperating, or a number that stings, I see it. You are not a fraud for having a stage voice. You are just doing two jobs at once and only one of them is visible.

Keep pushing. I am going to go put the vacuum away and then answer an email.
